Dear America, DO MORE OF THIS!

Restored Faith In Humanity of the Day: A new trend aimed at helping locally owned mom-and-pop businesses is reportedly gaining traction across the country. Unlike their flashier counterpart, however, “Cash Mobs” don’t involve a song and dance routine — just a bunch of people eager to invest in their community.

The blogger who started it all, Buffalo-based engineer Chris Smith, explains that cash mobs are “sort of a reverse Groupon” in that people support local retailers, but instead of getting a discount, they pay full price.

Smith says he hopes cash mobs lead to a “longer-term relationship with customers” who gain new-found respect for locally owned stores.

So far cash mobs have been organized in 32 states. There have also been international efforts in Canada and the UK.

A website called Cash Mobs aims to help people organize local events. They’ve even set March 24th as National Cash Mob day.

“It’s not just about the money that comes in that day, it’s about a real small business that doesn’t have a lot of money and a marketing budget,” says Smith. “They get a little earned media coverage they wouldn’t normally get that allows them to establish themselves a little bit more.”

Following up on an earlier item, here was the witness table at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, as discussion about contraception access and health care got underway.

You’ll notice, of course, that all of the witnesses are men. What you can’t tell from the photo is that the second panel will feature four more men, and the combined total of the nine witnesses will include no women, no experts on contraception, no experts on health care, and no experts who might say something Republicans disagree with.

As ThinkProgress noted, this proved to be a bit too much for some of the Democratic woman on the committee. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) asked a sensible question under the circumstances: “Where are the women? When I look at this panel, I don’t see one, single woman representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need coverage for basic preventive health care services.”

As the ~~farce~~ hearing progressed, nearly all of the Democratic women on the committee left the room in protest.

I’m literally flabbergasted here. I can’t think of any way to adequately express how dumb I think this is. It’s like the GOP sat down and asked themselves, “What is the absolute stupidest way we can handle this? How can we make this look as bad as possible?”

It’s not even that experts should all be women, but they couldn’t find at least ONE woman to agree to tout their silly agenda? Amazing. Simply amazing.

Religious people freaking out about birth control in the health care mandate need to chill the fuck out. NO ONE IS MAKING YOU USE IT, they’re just saying that if you employ people, you have to OFFER it. No one is going to shove birth control pills down your throat. No one is “declaring war on religion.”

Y’know why you should have to offer it? Because imposing your religious ideals on people who don’t share them is against the law in our country, especially if you’re an employer. What about that is so hard to understand?

Oh, and Catholics who are going full-psychopath over this, 98% of Catholic women already use some form of birth control. Also, the church’s stand against birth control started after Vatican II in the 1960s, so don’t act like you’ve been against condoms and birth control pills since the fucking dark ages.

One last thing- I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s really messed up that a religion presided over by a bunch of celibate men thinks it knows best when it comes to women’s reproductive rights. I mean, come on…

Remember folks, Eisenhower was a Republican AND a lifelong military man. He was strongly anti-communist and pro-interventionalist, yet strongly supported the New Deal and other social programs and public works projects. (have you driven on an interstate highway, yeah, that was his idea)
