Energy Ideas Democrats and Republicans Agree On -... →
He may not have been the best governor, but he does have some grounded, actionable ideas about how we need to move forward with our energy policy.
We need to take advantage of the natural abundance that we have across our country. In some places, that might still be oil or coal, but we need to stop using non-renewables as a crutch. Solar in our deserts, wind turbines across our great plains,...

This is the same guy who said that legalizing gay marriage would lead to beastiality. I’m pretty sure Rick Santorum’s version of “slippery slope” looks more like a cliff with a bunch of crazy at the bottom of it.

Gingrich calls for return to religious roots - San... →
Man, am I ever glad I never had Newt Gingrich as a history professor.
Exhaustive studies have been done by people with far too much time on their hands (which can occasionally be a good thing) that have shown that neither Lincoln or Washington were especially religious. Sure, they prayed. Lots of people pray. But that doesn’t mean that the only way to make America great is to “return...

From the article -
In 2009, the richest 5 percent claimed 63.5 percent of the nation’s wealth. The overwhelming majority, the bottom 80 percent, collectively held just 12.8 percent.
Do not ever forget this fact. We’re being fleeced and most of us either don’t realize it or aren’t remotely interested in finding out in the first place. We need to stop worshiping celebrity and...

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. Whoa. What the fuck, Stossel? Have you been letting your mustache do all of your reasoning for you or something?

I’m sorry, but you cannot be fucking serious. Please pull your head (and mustache) out of your ass before opening your mouth.
With Income Gap at 80-Year High, Solutions Remain... →
Obviously, we should shut down Planned Parenthood, ban gay marriage, get rid of unions, outlaw abortion, persecute Muslims and fire teachers. That’ll fix everything.
Seriously, write or call your congressman. They’ve been listening to the wrong people for far too long. It’s time they remembered who their constituents are.

Cyclo-geddon: Day 1
Today I rode my bike to work for the first time today. 7.7 miles and 45 minutes of nice, mostly peaceful commuting to start the day, in contrast to 6.9 miles and anywhere from 10-20 minutes when I drive. So, not too shabby. I had to wake up a few minutes earlier and I didn’t get my usual coffee fix until I got to work, but the 30+ degree weather rushing against my face and exposed shins...

This is why I love history. Not just for the tales of heroism and pivotal, world-shaping events, but for that direct connection with souls who walked this same earth thousands of years ago. When it comes down to it, we haven’t changed all that much.

Reasons for Disbelief →
This contains one of my favorite quotes, from Epicurus -
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead;...

Growing Up Nate: Daddy's Little Mimic
Like most little boys, I adored my father. I followed him around every evening and weekend, not for any particular reason, but just to be with him. I would hand him tools while he fixed the lawnmower or pick up twigs and branches when he cut down dead trees in our backyard. Whenever there was a chance to follow in his footsteps or do what he was doing, I jumped at it.
My dad is built like a...

One of my earliest memories is of my great-grandfather driving me around the yard on his 1930 Minneapolis Moline. He had long since stopped working the land by that time, but he kept some of his equipment around, I guess to putter about and give himself something to do. I hated the noise it...
