Ted
It’s strange. In my lifetime, the name Kennedy was always an echo of times past. It was a remembrance of John and Bobby and the tragedy that followed their lives. Ted was always the afterthought, or, in my house growing up, the punchline.
Yes, he had his troubles with alcohol and womanizing. Yes, he lived with the stigma of not living up to the high ideals that his older brothers set forth...

This is by far the coolest thing I’ve seen in years. IF- and that’s a big if-IF he can get this off the ground, well, wow.

– Ted Kennedy has died. I guess this marks the end of an era.

Just woke up from the moat random dream ever. A drunk Craig Finn from The Hold Steady and myself were at a summer camp that became overrun with zombies. Their one weakness was the screech of a well-played guitar solo.
The only way out was to climb onto a giant paper mâché gorilla and jump off the top of it’s arm, which dropped you outside of the main gate.
Oh yeah, and the paper mâché...

Choice quote: “The United States incarcerates people at nearly five times the world average. Of those sentenced to state prisons, 82 percent were convicted of nonviolent crimes, according to one study.”
There’s even more infuriating shit in there, too. Go ahead, read it and get royally pissed off.

Roger Ebert on Food Inc. and Big Farming →
As a person who grew up surrounded by struggling family farms, who’s friends all had fathers who were farmers and who eventually worked as a farmhand, I don’t think I can watch this movie. I know that things are rotten in the way that the food we eat is produced. I hear about the shit that Monsanto and it’s ilk do to people who are essentially the same as the farmers I grew up...

I was about to write about just this; the issue concerning the astroturfing of wingnuts at health care town hall meetings. As so often happens with issues such as this, though, my old buddy Wisco manages to do a much better job of summing up the madness than I think I could. Mine probably would have contained many more instances of the words “fuck,” “motherfuckers,”...

I killed a mouse with my bare hands yesterday.
We’ve had a mouse problem in our garage for about a month now. I’ve hunted around trying to find out where they nest. I’ve put out mouse traps, which were found either empty and un-tripped or empty and tripped. I’ve put out two cubes of poison only to come back the next day and see them gone. I assumed it must’ve been a...
